Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge spans 1.7 miles across the strait connecting San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean, completing in 1937 what had previously been considered an impossible engineering challenge. Its distinctive International Orange color — chosen for visibility in fog — and two 746-foot towers make it the most recognizable landmark in California. The main span, 4,200 feet between towers, held the record as the world's longest suspension span for 27 years after construction. Visitors approach from several directions. The pedestrian walkway on the eastern side opens daily and offers unobstructed views of the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, and the Marin Headlands across the water. Cyclists may use the eastern and western pathways depending on the day and time, with Sausalito accessible on the Marin side. A round trip on foot takes approximately 90 minutes at a relaxed pace; most visitors pause at the midpoint to look down at the shipping channel 220 feet below. The best photography vantage points lie off the bridge itself. Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands, reached via a short uphill walk from a roadside pull-out, positions the full span below eye level against the San Francisco skyline — the most prized angle. Fort Point beneath the south anchorage frames the main span from directly below, and Crissy Field provides the classic straight-on sea-level composition. Marshall's Beach, reached by a steep Presidio trail, gives a lower angle framed by the Marin hills. Fog is common year-round and can fully obscure the towers; summer mornings are particularly susceptible, though fog often retreats by early afternoon. Winter visits can be surprisingly clear. The south-side visitor plaza includes exhibits on the bridge's construction and labor history. Parking at the south lot fills by mid-morning on weekends; Muni bus routes from downtown San Francisco reach the bridge entrance at a fraction of the parking cost.
