The Ancient City of Troy, located near Tevfikiye village in Çanakkale Province, is one of the most celebrated archaeological sites in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. The most striking feature upon arrival is Schliemann's Trench — the deep cut made by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s that exposed lower Bronze Age levels but also damaged much of the stratigraphy. Standing at the edge of this trench gives an immediate sense of the site's depth and complexity. Troy VI and Troy VII, dating to roughly 1700–1100 BCE, represent the layers associated with the Mycenaean-era conflict described in Homer's Iliad. Portions of massive limestone defensive walls from Troy VI, including the impressive East Tower, still stand several metres high and rank among the most evocative structures on site.
The Troy I gate and the remains of megarons from the earliest occupation layers are visible along marked pathways. A wooden reconstruction of the Trojan Horse stands near the entrance and provides a popular orientation point. The small on-site museum and the adjacent Çanakkale Museum of Troy house thousands of artefacts recovered over 150 years of excavation, including replicas of gold jewellery from Priam's Treasure, ceramics, and votive figurines.
A typical visit covers the main archaeological circuit in two to three hours; combining Troy with the Museum of Troy requires a half-day. Morning visits are best in summer when the site is cooler and crowds are lighter before the tour buses arrive around 10:30. Shade is limited, so a hat and water bottle are essential. The panoramic view toward the Troad plain and the distant Dardanelles from the top of the tel is best in clear morning light.
Crowd levels peak on weekends and during the April–May period when tourists combine Troy with Gallipoli. A combined ticket covering both Troy and the Museum of Troy offers a saving over separate admissions.
