Butterfly Valley from the Cliff Edge

The cliff viewpoint above Butterfly Valley at Faralya village in the Fethiye district of Muğla province, Turkey, offers one of the most vertiginous top-down coastal compositions on the Turquoise Coast. The shooting position sits at the edge of a sheer limestone promontory roughly 200 metres above the valley floor, looking down into a densely forested canyon whose narrow sand beach meets the open Aegean at the far end of the frame. The valley earns its name from the Jersey Tiger butterfly (Euplagia quadripunctaria), which migrates here in large numbers from late May through early September, adding a biological dimension to an already striking geological scene. For photography, the most productive light falls in the morning between 07:00 and 10:00, when the sun illuminates the canyon from the east while the sea retains a deep, pre-haze blue. By late morning, Aegean sea haze frequently reduces clarity of the water colour and blurs distant detail. The cliff edge is completely unfenced at the Faralya lookout; sturdy footwear with grip is essential, and tripod deployment is practical on flat rock surfaces set back from the rim. The viewpoint is reachable on foot from Faralya village via a short path of approximately 300 metres; the village itself is served by minibuses (dolmuş) from Fethiye, a drive of about 45 minutes on a narrow winding road. No entrance fee applies at the cliff viewpoint itself, though boat transport to the valley floor below is commercially operated. An ultra-wide lens (14–21mm) captures the full canyon, beach, and sea in a single frame; a telephoto (100–300mm) compresses the layers of valley, beach, and open water into a tighter coastal composition. The butterfly microhabitat within the valley is a protected natural area under Turkish conservation law; disturbing the habitat or interfering with animals at close range is prohibited.
