Marmaris Castle Museum

Marmaris Castle Museum occupies a compact but well-preserved Ottoman fortress built in 1522 on a rocky hill overlooking the Marmaris harbour in Muğla province. The castle was constructed on the orders of Suleiman the Magnificent as a forward staging post for the Ottoman fleet's campaign against the Knights Hospitaller stronghold on Rhodes, which fell to Ottoman forces later that same year. The original structure was substantially rebuilt following an earthquake in 1958 and again during later conservation works, giving the exterior its current clean-cut appearance. The castle houses the Marmaris Museum, which presents the history and archaeology of the Marmaris district across a modest but well-organised series of rooms. The permanent collection covers artefacts from the prehistoric, Bronze Age, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, drawn from excavations at nearby ancient sites including Physkos (the ancient settlement on the Marmaris peninsula) and Amos. Notable pieces include Hellenistic and Roman ceramics, Byzantine jewellery and coins, and Ottoman-era weapons, ceramics, and decorative arts. A section of the museum documents the castle's own construction and the 1522 Rhodes campaign through maps, illustrations, and explanatory panels. The castle's elevated position provides panoramic views over the marina, the town, and the pine-covered hills of the national park beyond — views that themselves justify the modest climb from the old bazaar district below. The immediate surroundings of the castle, including the old quarter (kale içi), preserve a cluster of traditional stone houses and small workshops that add atmospheric context to the visit.
