Malatya is a province in eastern Turkey renowned as the world's leading producer of apricots, set on a high plateau at the foot of the Taurus and Anti-Taurus mountains. The city combines a rich Assyrian, Hittite, and Ottoman heritage with the archaeological wonder of Arslantepe Mound — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and serves as a gateway to the dramatic Euphrates canyon at Karakaya Lake and Mount Nemrut.
Malatya has a semi-arid continental climate at approximately 900 m elevation. Summers are hot and dry (July–August average high 34–36 °C / 93–97 °F) while winters are cold with regular snowfall (January average low -4 °C / 25 °F). Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer ideal conditions with mild temperatures, clear skies, and comfortable humidity. The apricot harvest in July is a major drawcard despite the heat. Mount Nemrut, accessible on day trips, can be near-freezing even in summer nights.
