Malatya Culture & Customs Guide 2026

How to read Malatya: the customs, manners, and unwritten rules that make visits smoother.

Malatya is a province in eastern Turkey renowned as the world's leading producer of apricots, set on a high plateau at the foot of the Taurus and Anti-Taurus mountains. The city combines a rich Assyrian, Hittite, and Ottoman heritage with the archaeological wonder of Arslantepe Mound — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and serves as a gateway to the dramatic Euphrates canyon at Karakaya Lake and Mount Nemrut.

Do's and don'ts

Quick guide to local norms.

Do

  • Do carry cash (₺) for markets, street food, and smaller restaurants — cards are not always accepted
  • Do buy and eat apricots as locals do — it is a point of local pride
  • Do try to learn a few basic Turkish phrases; locals appreciate the effort
  • Do accept tea offered by shopkeepers in the bazaar — it is a social custom and carries no obligation to buy
  • Do visit Arslantepe with the on-site signage — it provides excellent context without needing a guide

Don't

  • Do not enter mosques during the five daily prayer times (especially Friday midday)
  • Do not take photographs inside mosques during active prayer
  • Do not discuss politics relating to the Kurdish question or government without knowing someone well
  • Do not sit or lean on historical monuments and ruins, especially at Arslantepe
  • Do not loudly play music in residential neighbourhoods

Religion & spirituality

Understanding faith in Malatya.

Context

Items:

  • Faith
    Islam (Sunni)
    Practice
Dominant religion; mosque call to prayer (ezan) is heard five times daily across the city. Mosques include the Ulu Camii in Battalgazi and several large mosques in the city centre. Friday (Cuma) is the main day of communal prayer; some shops may close briefly at midday on Fridays.
    Notes
Ramadan observance is widespread; restaurants in conservative neighbourhoods may close during daytime hours
  • Faith
    Alevi tradition
    Practice
The Arguvan and Darende areas have strong Alevi heritage. The Somuncu Baba shrine in Darende is revered by both Sunni and Alevi Muslims.
    Notes
Alevi culture values music (saz) highly — the Arguvan Folk Music Festival reflects this tradition
