Malatya is a province in eastern Turkey renowned as the world's leading producer of apricots, set on a high plateau at the foot of the Taurus and Anti-Taurus mountains. The city combines a rich Assyrian, Hittite, and Ottoman heritage with the archaeological wonder of Arslantepe Mound — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and serves as a gateway to the dramatic Euphrates canyon at Karakaya Lake and Mount Nemrut.

Keşkek and Traditional Malatya Cooking Class
Local home cooks in the Battalgazi district occasionally host small cooking sessions teaching keşkek (wheat-and-lamb porridge), şırdan (stuffed sheep stomach), and apricot jam preparation. Arrange through the Malatya Museum tourist information desk or ask at the Battalgazi Konak Hotel (the hotel can facilitate connections). Sessions run 3–4 hours and cost approximately ₺400–₺600/person (~$11–$17) including ingredients and a meal.

Foodie tips
Get more out of every meal.
July is the best month for food tourism — the city is full of fresh apricots, and the Festival adds street food stalls
Büryan kebapçısı shops open at 08:00 and typically sell out before 16:00 — do not leave this until evening
The Meyve Hali (wholesale market) is where locals buy produce; prices here are 30–40 % lower than tourist stalls
Tahin helvası (sesame-honey sweet) is another Malatya speciality — buy a block from bazaar shops and carry it as a snack
Most restaurants close by 22:00; plan dinner for 19:00–20:00
