Ermenek Canyon and Dam Lake

Ermenek Canyon and the Ermenek Dam Lake (Ermenek Barajı) form one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in Karaman Province, Turkey. The Ermenek River has carved a deep gorge through the western Taurus Mountains near the town of Ermenek, approximately 115 km southwest of Karaman by road. The dam completed in the 2000s created a long, sinuous reservoir that winds through the canyon for roughly 60 km, its vivid turquoise water contrasting with white and grey limestone walls that rise sharply hundreds of metres on either side. The standard way to experience the canyon is by boat excursion from the Ermenek jetty: local operators offer trips of varying lengths along the reservoir gorge, passing beneath towering cliff faces, seasonal waterfalls cascading from side gullies, and cave openings accessible only from the water. The canyon walls narrow dramatically in places, creating a corridor effect where the sky overhead reduces to a bright strip. The town of Ermenek itself, perched above the valley, has its own historical texture including a small castle and Ottoman-era mosque worth a brief exploration before or after the boat trip. Spring visits in April and May see the canyon at its most vivid — snowmelt swells the river, the limestone walls drip with seasonal waterfalls, and the surrounding slopes are intensely green. Summer boat trips provide natural cooling on the water despite the heat. Autumn brings red and orange foliage to the canyon slopes in October and November. The mountain road from Karaman to Ermenek (approximately 2 hours) is scenic in its own right, traversing Taurus foothill terrain.
