Taşkale Underground Granaries

Taşkale Underground Granaries (Taşkale Ambarları) are a remarkable network of rock-cut grain storage chambers carved horizontally into the pale volcanic tuff cliffs above Taşkale village, approximately 24 km south of Karaman in Turkey. An estimated several dozen granary chambers are cut at various heights into the cliff face, originally accessible by wooden ladders and a series of narrow rock-hewn ledge paths that still run along the cliff today. Dating from the medieval and early modern periods, the granaries served the agricultural communities of the Karaman plain as secure, thermally stable storage for grain, dried legumes, and winter provisions. The temperature-regulating properties of the tuff rock made these cliff-face chambers far more reliable than surface-level storage, keeping contents cool in summer and frost-free in winter. The visual impact of the honey-coloured tuff cliff studded with dark rectangular granary openings — each framed by the shadow of its cut lintel — is striking, particularly in morning light when the openings cast deep shadow and the pale cliff face glows in the low sun. The village immediately below the cliff preserves a traditional character with stone houses, an Ottoman-era mosque, and an informal village square. A short path from the village tea-house leads to the cliff base and viewing area; some lower granary chambers can be entered with care via the ledge path. A visit typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. The site is free, ungated, and rarely visited by tourists, giving it an unhurried and authentic atmosphere. Taşkale is best reached by private car from Karaman on secondary roads (approximately 30 minutes).
