Isparta Halı Dokumahanesi (Carpet Weaving Workshop)

The Isparta Carpet Weaving Workshop (Isparta Halı Dokumahanesi) in the Çünür neighbourhood offers visitors a direct encounter with one of Isparta's defining craft industries. Isparta has been a major Turkish carpet production centre since the late 19th century, initially developed through partnerships with European trading houses who introduced Persian design motifs to Anatolian weavers. The city gives its name to the Isparta carpet — a wool-pile knotted carpet characterised by central medallion designs, rich floral borders, and a warm palette of reds, blues, and cream that made the style internationally marketable. Workshop tours allow visitors to observe weavers working at vertical looms, watch the hand-knotting process that builds the pile one row at a time, and see the cleaning, stretching, and clipping processes that produce the finished surface. A skilled weaver at a traditional loom can typically tie 8,000–12,000 knots per day; a medium-sized carpet may contain several million knots representing months of work. Tours are conducted in Turkish, with some informal guidance available for English-speaking visitors. The showroom adjacent to the weaving floor displays new production pieces and occasionally vintage carpets, with prices reflecting size and knot density. The workshop is located in the industrial area of Çünür, a short taxi ride from the city centre. Weekday mornings are the best time to see full production activity; the workshop is closed at weekends.
