Eğirdir Lake

Eğirdir Lake (Eğirdir Gölü) is one of Turkey's largest and highest freshwater lakes, sitting at approximately 917 metres above sea level in Isparta Province. Covering around 517 square kilometres, the lake fills a broad valley between the Western Taurus mountains, creating a dramatic panorama of mirror-calm water framed by limestone peaks. The provincial town of Eğirdir occupies a narrow peninsula that juts into the southern end of the lake, giving visitors a near-360-degree water view from the town centre. Boat tours depart from Eğirdir harbour and cross the lake toward Yeşilada (Green Island) and the more remote northern reaches. A typical two-hour circuit passes reed beds inhabited by egrets and herons, offers views of the Byzantine-era Eğirdir Castle, and provides an opportunity to watch local fishermen tending nets for freshwater carp and trout. Most tours run between May and October; outside those months the lake is navigable but organised tours may be harder to book on short notice. The shoreline walking path along Eğirdir's peninsula allows visitors to observe the lake at close range without a boat. Early mornings in June produce particularly spectacular reflections, with rose-scented air drifting in from the surrounding valleys during the harvest season. Fishing is popular from jetties near the town centre, and swimming is possible from pebble beaches on the southern shore, though facilities are basic. Cycling around the lake perimeter is feasible for experienced riders and offers viewpoints unavailable from the main road. The lake is visually best from above: the ridge east of Eğirdir provides a sweeping panorama over the lake toward the distant Davraz massif. This vantage point is reached via a rough track from the town in about 30 minutes on foot. Photography is best in the two hours after sunrise when the water is stillest and the light turns the peaks gold. Crowd levels in Eğirdir town peak in July and August; visiting in May or September gives a quieter experience with comparable scenery and more comfortable temperatures.
