The shaded riverside edge of the UNESCO-listed Hevsel Gardens, used by local families for evening picnics. No facilities or lifeguards.
The Hevsel Gardens, about 700 hectares of orchards and market gardens between the southern walls of Diyarbakır and the Tigris, are the city's main green waterside area and a UNESCO cultural landscape. The riverside edge is quieter than the bridge area and gives shade under poplars and mulberry trees. Local families come to sit and picnic in the evenings of late spring and summer.
The land is farmed and partly private, so visitors should stay on tracks and keep off crops. There are no beach facilities, toilets or lifeguards, and no verified water-quality information. The river current is strong after snowmelt, and swimming is not advised. In recent years construction, a national garden project and tree felling have affected parts of the gardens, so some areas may be fenced. Visitors should carry food, water and shade, and leave no rubbish.
