Sofular Plateau Highland Walk

The Sofular Plateau Highland Walk explores Sofular Yaylası, a highland plateau in Gölpazarı district of Bilecik province, situated at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level. The plateau lies within the broader highland belt of northwestern Anatolia and offers open grassland scenery, distant ridgeline views, and a significantly cooler microclimate compared to the lowland valleys below.

Trailhead access: the plateau is reached by private car from Bilecik via Gölpazarı town (approximately one hour). The final approach road to the upper plateau is unpaved and narrow; a 4WD vehicle is recommended, particularly in early summer when the track may carry residual moisture. No public transport serves the plateau. Parking is available on the open grassland near the main yayla settlement. No permit or entry fee is required.

Route options vary from 5 to 15 kilometres and from 2 to 6 hours depending on the chosen circuit. No formally waymarked trails exist; hikers follow shepherd tracks across the grassland and ascend subsidiary ridges for expanded panoramas. The plateau floor sits at approximately 1,500 metres with additional gains of 100–300 metres on the higher ridge variants. The surface is predominantly short alpine grassland with occasional loose stone on ridge approaches. The open plateau is exposed to wind and to afternoon cloud buildups in summer, and shade is virtually absent except near rocky outcrops.

Key reference points include the yayla settlement itself — stone and timber seasonal shelters used by local herders — a prominent rocky ridge to the east forming the highest accessible viewpoint, and a series of small seasonal ponds on the plateau floor that attract waterfowl. Hikers establish their own turnaround points based on weather, time, and fitness.

No formal shelter huts exist; the yayla buildings are private seasonal dwellings. Water from plateau springs is available but must be treated before drinking. Mobile signal is generally absent across the plateau.
