İnkumu Beach Sunrise

İnkumu Beach is a three-kilometre arc of grey sand on the Black Sea coast roughly 30 kilometres west of Amasra in Bartın province, Turkey. The beach faces north-east, making it one of the few locations in the region where the sun rises almost directly over the water during summer months, producing a classic gold-on-sea sunrise composition. Photographers position themselves at the eastern end of the beach, where a low rocky headland provides a natural foreground element and breaks the otherwise open shoreline into distinct visual planes. At civil twilight, approximately 30 minutes before sunrise, the sky transitions through deep blue and purple tones that reflect cleanly on the wet sand left by receding waves, creating a mirror-like low-horizon reflection. As the sun crests the horizon, the colours shift rapidly to pink, orange, and gold over a span of roughly ten minutes, so composition must be settled before first light arrives. From late June through August the sun rises at approximately 05:30, requiring a very early departure from Bartın. By September the sunrise shifts to around 06:45, making the schedule considerably more manageable while still delivering warm orange-toned light on the sea surface. İnkumu village is small, with a handful of seasonal guesthouses and a tea house that typically opens after 07:00; visitors should bring water and a snack for the pre-dawn wait. The beach itself is open and free, with a gravel car park a five-minute walk from the east-end shooting position. Tripods are unrestricted on the public beach. Sea conditions influence the wet-sand reflection quality significantly: calm mornings with minimal wave action produce the most defined mirror effect, while windy days break up the reflection. Checking local wind forecasts the evening before helps prioritise the best shooting days.
