Amasra Harbour Fish Boats at Dawn

Amasra's Küçük Liman, the small working harbour on the eastern side of the peninsula in Bartın province, Turkey, is distinct from the larger tourist-facing Büyük Liman. In the autumn and winter fishing season, wooden and fibreglass fishing boats return to the harbour in the early morning, often arriving as civil twilight brightens the sky, creating a short but productive window for photographing the vessels against a glowing north-east horizon. The compositions available here span a wide range: wide-angle harbour overviews with the castle hill silhouetted above the boats, standard-zoom shots of colourfully painted hull sides reflected in the still harbour water, and telephoto close-ups of fishermen unloading nets and sorting their catch. The most productive shooting position is along the quay wall at the south end of the small harbour, which places the returning boats between the photographer and the north-eastern dawn sky. In autumn the sunrise arrives from the north-east at roughly 07:00, casting warm direct light on the brightly painted hull sides while the castle hill behind them remains in darker contrast. From October through February, sea mist is common at dawn and can add significant atmospheric softness to the scene, diffusing the golden light into a warm ambient glow across the entire harbour. The quay is an active working area; maintaining a respectful distance from fishing operations, not blocking access routes for fish crates, and asking before photographing individual fishermen at close range are all expected behaviours. The harbour is freely accessible at all hours, and the quayside café typically opens around 07:00.
