Meteor Crater Lake Reflection

The Meteor Crater (Göktaşı Krateri) in Ağrı Province, approximately 35 kilometres north of Doğubayazıt on the road toward Ağrı city, is a roughly circular impact structure approximately 60 metres in diameter whose central depression holds a small saline lake. The still surface acts as a natural mirror on calm, wind-free mornings, reflecting the surrounding rim and open sky with near-perfect fidelity. The crater rim rises a few metres above the surrounding plateau, making it visible from the approach road, and a walk of 200–400 metres from the nearest vehicle access point leads to the rim edge. The interior slope to the water is steep; most photographers shoot from the rim looking down and across the water rather than descending to the lakeside. In summer (June–August) the calm-morning window for mirror-flat reflections is roughly 05:30–08:00, after which local breeze typically disturbs the surface. The reflection composition works best with a wide-angle lens at low camera height — crouching or placing the tripod at its lowest setting brings the foreground crater rim into the frame. A polarising filter can deepen the water colour but typically reduces reflection intensity, so most photographers leave it off for the mirror shot. There are no admission fees, no permanent facilities, and no tripod restrictions at the site. The area is remote: the nearest settlement with reliable services is Doğubayazıt, roughly 35–40 minutes by road. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable for the final dirt-track section in wet conditions. The site is not formally signed from the main road; GPS coordinates (approximately 39.725°N, 44.182°E) are the most reliable navigation aid. In spring and autumn, birdlife around the saline lake can provide additional foreground compositional elements. The remote plateau setting and absence of artificial light also make the crater a viable astrophotography location in July–August when the Milky Way is high.
