Balık Gölü (Fish Lake)

Balık Gölü (Fish Lake) is a natural lake situated approximately 15 kilometres north-east of Doğubayazıt in Ağrı Province, lying on a plateau overlooked by the lower slopes of Mount Ararat to the north. The lake takes its name from the fish that inhabit its waters, and it has long served as a destination for local anglers who fish for trout and other freshwater species in its relatively clear, cold waters. The setting is quintessentially eastern Anatolian: a flat plateau lake edged by reeds and marsh vegetation, with the massive snowcapped bulk of Ararat rising immediately to the north and the plateau's open volcanic steppe extending in all other directions. In spring and early summer, the reed margins are alive with migrating and breeding waterbirds — herons, ducks, and various waders use the lake as a staging point on east-west migration routes across the Anatolian plateau. Birdwatchers equipped with binoculars can see a surprisingly diverse avifauna for so remote a site. The lake is not developed for tourism — there is no car park, no footpath, and no visitor facilities — and the approach from Doğubayazıt follows a rough road across the plateau. A round-trip taxi costs TRY 200–300. The lake can be combined with other sites around Doğubayazıt — İshak Paşa Sarayı and the Kuzeytepe viewpoint — as part of a full day's exploration of the area north and east of town. The Ararat backdrop makes the lake a photographer's location of interest for those seeking a different foreground to the usual town or palace composition: calm water surface, reed edges, and the massive snowfield beyond create a distinctive layered image that few other locations in the region can match.
