Cleopatra Beach (Alanya)

Cleopatra Beach is Alanya's signature stretch of coast, a 2-kilometre arc of unusually fine golden sand running along the western base of the Alanya peninsula in the Antalya province of Turkey. Legend holds that Cleopatra bathed here during her visit to the city with Mark Antony, and the beach has traded on that romantic mythology ever since. The sand is notably finer and more golden than most beaches in this part of the Mediterranean, a quality that contributes to the beach's lasting fame.

The water is clear turquoise shading to deeper blue further out, and calm for much of the summer thanks to the sheltering effect of the peninsula to the east. Waves remain small and swimming conditions are generally safe. The dramatic Alanya castle perched on the red rock peninsula at the eastern end provides a constant visual backdrop that is particularly striking in late afternoon light.

Beach infrastructure is comprehensive: sunbeds and umbrellas from multiple operators, changing rooms, showers, beach restaurants and cafes, and a water sports centre offering jet skiing, banana boats, parasailing, and paddleboarding. Lifeguards are stationed during peak season hours. The western end of the beach transitions into a park-lined promenade that connects to Alanya's restaurant and hotel strip.

Alanya is 133 kilometres east of Antalya by the D400 coastal road, roughly two hours by car or bus from Antalya's intercity bus station. Local dolmuş minibuses run frequently between Alanya town centre and the beach, which is also walkable from the central Alanya hotel district. The beach faces almost due west and enjoys sun throughout the day. Water temperatures peak at around 28–29°C in August. Cleopatra Beach is extremely busy in July and August, with the western end closest to the promenade being the most crowded; the eastern end, near the base of the castle peninsula, tends to be slightly quieter.
