Kazan Restaurant & Bar

Kazan Restaurant & Bar is a traditional meyhane (tavern) located in the Ulus district of Ankara, in a neighbourhood associated with the capital's older, more historically layered character. A meyhane is a distinctly Turkish institution — combining the roles of restaurant, bar, and social gathering place, with the ritual of rakı-and-meze at its centre. Kazan adheres faithfully to this format, offering an evening experience built around slow dining, cold meze, fresh fish, and the gradual consumption of house rakı.

The interior follows the traditional meyhane blueprint: wooden tables set close together, warm lighting, modest decor, and a convivial noise level that rises as the evening progresses. The crowd is predominantly local — a mixed age range with a strong contingent of middle-aged Ankara residents who return regularly for the tradition as much as the food. Foreign visitors with an interest in Turkish culture find the setting authentic and welcoming. Dress code is informal; there is no entry restriction.

The food programme is central to the experience. Cold meze — selections of haydari (yoghurt with herbs), patlıcan salatası (smoked aubergine), and seasonal offerings — arrive first, eaten slowly with rakı. Main courses lean toward grilled fish and slow-cooked lamb. Dinner for two including rakı typically runs to 800–1,400 TRY.

Rakı is served in the traditional manner: a small carafe alongside a separate glass of chilled water, diluted to taste. Wine and beer are available but secondary to the rakı culture of the house. On Thursday and Friday evenings, a live fasıl ensemble — the traditional Turkish classical and folk music form — performs from around 20:30. These are the most social and animated evenings, and reservations are strongly recommended. Kazan opens daily at 19:00 and closes at approximately 01:00. There is no cover charge, though the evening is best understood as a dining occasion rather than a drinks-only visit.
