Hazeranlar Konağı (1865)

The Hazeranlar Konağı, built in 1865 by Hasan Talat Efendi for his daughter Hazeran Hanım, is the most celebrated surviving example of the Ottoman timber-frame riverside mansion style that once lined both banks of the Yeşilırmak in Amasya. The building takes its name from its first resident, and its architectural form—a three-storey projecting bay (cumba) structure with carved wooden grilles, painted plaster interiors, and a walled garden opening to the riverside—exemplifies the domestic architecture of prosperous Ottoman provincial families in the mid-to-late 19th century. The exterior is finished in the traditional Amasya ochre and terracotta palette, and the cumba (cantilevered upper bay) characteristic of the Yalıboyu mansions projects over the riverbank, allowing a view up and down the Yeşilırmak from the upper reception rooms. Internally, the mansion is divided into the selamlık (men's reception quarters) and haremlik (women's quarters) in the traditional Ottoman manner, with painted ceiling panels, built-in niches (dolaplar), and original hearth surrounds in several rooms. The building was restored by the Amasya Special Provincial Administration in the 1980s and converted into an ethnography museum, with furnished rooms displaying traditional Ottoman domestic life—textiles, copperware, embroidery, and period furniture. The house stands on the Yalıboyu promenade and is one of a row of surviving Ottoman mansions, collectively recognised as the most intact riverside Ottoman domestic streetscape in Turkey.
