Afyonkarahisar is a province and city in western-central Turkey, on the inner Aegean plateau at around 1,020 m elevation. Known as Turkey's thermal-spa capital, it is famous for the mineral-rich hot springs of Gazlıgöl, Ömer-Gecek, and Sandıklı, a dramatic castle rising on a volcanic rock above the city, and a celebrated food culture of kaymak clotted cream, Turkish delight, and Afyon sucuk sausage. The region also guards the rock-cut monuments of the Phrygian Valley and key heritage of Turkey's 1922 War of Independence.

Wellness travel tips
Get the most from your wellness experience.
Limit individual thermal pool soaks to 15-20 minutes and rest in between — the mineral water is potent and the heat is dehydrating
Drink at least 2 litres of water per day during a thermal visit; mineral water is not a substitute for fresh drinking water
The Sandıklı Hüdai springs are best for the mud-bath experience; Gazlıgöl is best for carbonated mineral bathing; Ömer-Gecek is the most developed resort cluster
Consult the clinic at Korel Thermal before undertaking medical thermal treatment if suffering from cardiovascular conditions
The busiest thermal season is winter (November-March); book resort rooms and treatment sessions well in advance for peak dates
Most thermal resorts sell day-use (günübirlik) packages covering pool access, sauna and sometimes lunch without overnight accommodation
