Afyonkarahisar is a province and city in western-central Turkey, on the inner Aegean plateau at around 1,020 m elevation. Known as Turkey's thermal-spa capital, it is famous for the mineral-rich hot springs of Gazlıgöl, Ömer-Gecek, and Sandıklı, a dramatic castle rising on a volcanic rock above the city, and a celebrated food culture of kaymak clotted cream, Turkish delight, and Afyon sucuk sausage. The region also guards the rock-cut monuments of the Phrygian Valley and key heritage of Turkey's 1922 War of Independence.

Afyon Kaymak and Ekmek Kadayıfı Workshop
Informal cooking workshops in kaymak preparation and ekmek kadayıfı (syrup-soaked bread pudding with clotted cream) are occasionally offered through Afyonkarahisar's UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy network and some traditional kaymak producers. Participants learn to prepare the city's signature dessert.
Poppy-Seed Pastry and Bükmece Dough Class
Local home cooks and occasional craft-bakery programmes offer instruction in making haşhaşlı çörek (poppy-seed pastry) and bükmece thin-dough pastry filled with lentils — two of Afyonkarahisar's signature baked goods tied to the region's regulated poppy cultivation.

Foodie tips
Get more out of every meal.
Arrive on a Tuesday to combine the Sali Pazari (weekly market) with the sucuk and kaymak shop circuit for the widest selection
The best sucuk tasting is available most mornings at the named producers in the central bazaar — no appointment needed
Kaymak is best fresh in the morning; afternoon quality can decline as the cream sits
Most traditional lokantalar and sweet shops are cash-friendly; carry TRY banknotes for smaller purchases
The UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status means the Tourism Office periodically organises food events and workshops — check in advance
