Zafer (Victory) Square - Hükümet Meydanı

Zafer (Victory) Square, also known as Hükümet Meydanı (Government Square), is the central civic square of Afyonkarahisar and the natural hub of the city's walkable historic core. The square is ringed by the provincial government buildings, the main post office and a row of tea houses and cafes whose tables spread under plane trees in warm weather. At its centre stands a statue of Atatürk, the standard civic monument found in the main square of virtually every Turkish city. The square takes its name from the decisive Great Offensive victory of August 1922, the conclusion of the Turkish War of Independence, which was launched from the hills south-west of Afyonkarahisar. Commemorative plaques and inscriptions around the square reinforce this historical identity. The square is most animated in the evenings when local residents gather at the cafe tables and children play in the adjacent paved area; it is a genuine urban social space rather than a set-piece tourist attraction. From the square, the old town, Bedesten market, Ulu Camii and the start of the castle climb are all within a five-minute walk. The square serves as the practical starting point for any walking tour of the city. Entry is free; the square is accessible 24 hours.
