Seydiler Castle (Seydiler Kalesi)

Seydiler Castle (Seydiler Kalesi) is a rock-cut fortress carved directly from a volcanic tufa outcrop near the town of Seydiler in the İhsaniye district, roughly 25 kilometres north of Afyonkarahisar. It is a characteristic example of the defensive and domestic rock-cutting tradition widespread across the Phrygian plateau, where the soft volcanic rock lent itself to carving rooms, steps, channels and platforms without requiring quarried building stone. The castle comprises a series of chambers hewn into the rock face, with steps cut into the outcrop leading up to higher platforms and lookout points. The carved rooms vary in size and function; some are clearly domestic or storage spaces, others are too narrow for habitation and may have served as cisterns or granaries. Tomb facades are also present in the immediate surroundings. The summit platform commands wide views across the rolling scrubland of the Phrygian landscape toward the main valley monuments to the north. The site is not formally managed; there are no information panels, fencing or facilities. The terrain requires a short scramble over rocky ground to reach the upper platforms. Entry is free. A visit takes about one hour, and Seydiler Castle is most efficiently combined with the nearby Aslantaş and Yılantaş tombs and the Ayazını settlement on a Phrygian Valley circuit.
