The Mevlevihane Museum in central Afyonkarahisar occupies one of the earliest Mevlevi (Whirling Dervish) lodges in Anatolia, founded in the late 13th century. Historically it was regarded as the most important Mevlevi centre in the region after the principal lodge in Konya, where the order's founder Rumi is buried. The complex was destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times; the current structure is a restored version opened as a museum. The centrepiece is the semahane, the large circular ceremonial hall where dervishes performed the sema whirling ceremony. The hall is well proportioned, with a wooden gallery surrounding the central floor and painted decorative panels above. Display cases in the surrounding rooms present Mevlevi musical instruments — ney flutes, kudum drums and rebab — as well as the order's characteristic dress: the white semazen robes, tall felt sikke hats and broad-sleeved tennures. Manuscripts and calligraphic works from the Mevlevi tradition are exhibited alongside explanatory panels tracing the history of the lodge and the order in Afyonkarahisar. The building's courtyard includes a small garden, and the overall atmosphere is calm and contemplative. Entry is free.
