Dar Zitoun Guesthouse

Dar Zitoun Guesthouse occupies a converted traditional townhouse on Rue Sidi Ben Arous, deep inside the Tunis medina, a UNESCO World Heritage quarter of covered souks and narrow alleys. The Zitouna Mosque and the main souk arteries are a short walk away, and the medina's Bab Bhar gate onto the modern city centre and the TGM light-rail line for La Marsa and Carthage can be reached on foot in about fifteen minutes. The house keeps the bones of an old Tunisian dar: thick stone walls, a tiled central courtyard open to the sky, and recessed doorways that shut out street noise once inside. Rooms are simple and clean rather than decorated to a theme, mostly with shared bathrooms, fans or basic air conditioning, and a few dormitory-style beds aimed at backpackers; a handful of private rooms suit couples or solo travellers wanting a door to close. There is no in-house restaurant, but breakfast can be arranged and is typically taken in the courtyard, with the medina's bakeries, juice stalls and grilled-food stands all within a few minutes' walk for other meals. There is no spa, pool or fitness facility, in keeping with the budget, no-frills positioning of the property. Service is informal and personal: the owner and staff are known for helping guests navigate the medina's maze of lanes, arranging onward transport, and storing luggage before early flights or late check-outs, making the guesthouse a practical, sociable base for travellers prioritising atmosphere and price over amenities.
