Dar Ya Boutique Hotel

Dar Ya Boutique Hotel occupies a restored 19th-century dar on Rue du Tribunal, one of the principal lanes threading through the heart of the Tunis medina. The Great Mosque of Tunis (Zitouna Mosque) is a three-minute walk; the main souks for gold, cloth, and ceramics are immediately adjacent; and the medina's southern gate, Bab el Bhar, is roughly 600 metres on foot. The property sits within the UNESCO-listed medina quarter, a position that gives it cultural immediacy no hotel outside the old city walls can replicate.

The building follows the traditional dar typology: rooms arranged around a central courtyard anchored by a marble fountain, with each storey receding inward toward an open sky. Original elements — carved plasterwork (stucco), geometric zellige floor tiles, and cedar wood ceilings with painted detailing — have been retained and restored rather than replaced. The overall effect is of a private Tunisian house adapted carefully for guests.

The hotel offers a limited number of individually decorated rooms; each has its own character through the choice of textiles, antique furniture, and locally sourced decorative objects. Rooms are air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms; higher categories have views over the courtyard rather than onto the lane outside. A rooftop terrace serves coffee, mint tea, and light bites through the day, providing elevated views over the medina roofline.

Breakfast is served in the courtyard each morning, typically featuring traditional Tunisian elements — brik pastries, olive oil, fresh dates, local cheeses, and strong coffee. Service is personally managed by the resident team, with the concierge offering guided introductions to the medina's heritage sites, hammam recommendations, and introductions to local artisan workshops.
