Matafonua Lodge occupies a prime stretch of Foa Island's western shoreline in the Ha'apai group, roughly 160 kilometres north of Nuku'alofa and reachable by a 35-minute domestic flight from the capital followed by a 20-minute road transfer. The lodge sits within the Ha'apai Conservation Area, a protected marine zone that draws humpback whales between July and October each year, positioning it as one of the Pacific's most accessible bases for swimming with wild cetaceans. Architecture blends traditional Pacific design with elevated timber fales — thatched-roof open-air structures raised on stilts — that catch consistent trade winds and frame unobstructed ocean views. Each fale is furnished with a king bed, mosquito nets, and en-suite bathroom, maintaining comfort without relying on heavy air conditioning in a naturally ventilated setting.
The lodge's restaurant serves three meals daily, drawing on local catches, garden herbs, and island produce to produce a menu that changes with availability.
