A tree-shaded terrace on a hill in the old town, looking across the Limmat to the Grossmünster, Rathaus and Niederdorf rooftops.
The Lindenhof is a small hilltop square above the Limmat in Zürich's old town, on the site of a Roman fort and a medieval imperial palace. A low wall on its eastern edge offers the classic view across the river to the twin towers of the Grossmünster and the roofs of the Niederdorf. The square is shaded by linden and chestnut trees, which frame the view in summer and open it in winter. It is open without charge and always accessible, with chess players and benches adding local character. Photographers use the late afternoon for warm light on the east-bank facades, and dusk for the lit towers. A tripod is usually tolerated if kept clear of pedestrians; drone use in the old town is restricted under Swiss rules.
