A free public greenhouse complex with one of Europe's biggest collections of succulent plants, from desert cacti to African aloes.
The Städtische Sukkulenten-Sammlung Zürich, run by the city, houses thousands of species of cacti and other succulents in a series of greenhouses at Mythenquai. Founded in 1931, it is among the world's leading public collections, with plants from the Americas, Africa and Madagascar. Entrance is free. The warm, dry halls are especially welcome in winter, and the lakeside setting makes a natural pair with a walk along Mythenquai. The visit is short, around 30 to 45 minutes, but plant lovers often linger.
