The Harder Kulm hike is the classic climb from the valley floor of Interlaken, in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, to the viewing platform on the Harder ridge at 1,322 m. The trailhead is the Harderbahn valley station, about a 10-minute walk from Interlaken Ost railway station, so no car, parking or permit is needed. The route covers roughly 6 km one way with about 750 m of elevation gain, taking 2.5 to 3 hours uphill and 1.5 to 2 hours back down. Technically it is a moderate walk: the path is well signposted, with no scrambling or serious exposure, though a few steeper stretches have steps and roots. The surface is a mix of forest track, packed dirt, gravel and some rocky sections, and most of the ascent is under beech and spruce cover, which gives welcome shade on summer afternoons. Hikers climb through the woods above the Aare, with glimpses of the town and Lake Brienz opening up through the trees. Higher up the forest thins into meadow, and the final stretch reaches the Harder Kulm complex, where the Two Lakes Bridge platform looks across Lake Thun and Lake Brienz to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The restaurant at the summit provides food and drink, and water can be bought there; no reliable natural water sources are marked along the trail, so a litre or more should be carried from the start. There are no staffed mountain huts on this route, but the summit buildings offer shelter. The natural turn-around point is the Kulm itself. Many hikers walk up and ride the Harderbahn funicular back down to save their knees, which makes the funicular an easy bail-out if weather or fatigue changes the plan. The funicular is scheduled to run from 3 April to 29 November 2026, so the descent option depends on the season. Walkers who prefer to stay on foot can return by the same path or by alternative signposted trails toward Interlaken or Unterseen. Because the trail faces the valley, it can be hot in July and August, and the upper slopes may hold snow or ice outside the main hiking season.
