Amangalla

Amangalla occupies the former New Oriental Hotel, a building dating to 1684 that originally served as the residence of the Dutch Commander of Galle. It stands on Church Street at the heart of Galle Fort, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed coastal fortification built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch between the 16th and 18th centuries. The fort's ramparts, lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, and narrow cobblestone lanes are within a few minutes' walk in any direction. The ocean beach outside the fort walls is accessible in under five minutes on foot, and the Colombo–Galle Southern Expressway reduces the drive from the capital to under two hours.

The hotel contains 29 Chambers and Suites, each furnished with colonial antiques, four-poster beds, and polished timber floors. Ceilings soar above four metres in most rooms, preserving the sense of the building's plantation-era scale. Bathrooms feature freestanding baths and separate rain showers with artisan stone and timber finishes. The architecture and décor are the product of noted designer Jean-Michel Gathy, whose approach restores rather than reinterprets the colonial layers of the structure.

Dining at Amangalla centres on The Restaurant, set in the original ballroom, where Sri Lankan and continental menus change daily according to market availability. A Plantation Tea service takes place each afternoon on the pillared veranda overlooking the central courtyard and pool—an experience that draws both guests and day visitors by reservation.

The Aman Spa incorporates nine treatment rooms arranged around a secondary courtyard, with therapies drawing on Ayurvedic medicine and Indonesian Jamu traditions. Butler service is standard for all guests and extends to arranging private excursions to the Sinharaja rainforest, whale watching off Mirissa, and visits to Unawatuna and Jungle Beach.
