Café Bar Iruña

Café Bar Iruña is Pamplona's most famous and historically significant café, occupying a prime corner position on the Plaza del Castillo — the city's grand central square — since 1888. The café's Moorish-influenced interior, with its elaborate tilework, painted columns, ornate plasterwork, and original bar fittings, has remained virtually unchanged for more than a century, making a visit as much an encounter with architectural history as a dining experience. Ernest Hemingway was a regular during the running of the bulls in the 1920s, and a bronze figure of the author now sits at one of the corner tables as a permanent tribute. The café serves all-day food: coffee and croissants in the morning, a simple lunch menú, and pintxos and raciones in the evening. The café con leche — served in traditional glass cups at the marble bar — is the definitive version of Pamplona's morning ritual. The tortilla española is thick, golden, and made to order. Evening pintxos include an assortment of cold assembled bites typical of the city. While the kitchen is satisfying rather than ambitious, the experience of sitting beneath the gilded ceiling of a 19th-century Moorish café on the Plaza del Castillo — particularly during the San Fermín festival, when the square becomes the beating heart of the city — is irreplaceable.
