Sierra de Urbasa High Plateau

The Sierra de Urbasa High Plateau lies within the Sierra de Urbasa-Andía Natural Park in western Navarre, a limestone plateau stretching roughly 20 kilometres east to west and rising to 1,175 metres above sea level. The main access point at the Área Recreativa de Urbasa near Lakuntza is approximately 57 kilometres southwest of Pamplona via the A-10 motorway. No direct public transport serves the plateau; buses from Pamplona connect to Estella (Lizarra), roughly 10 kilometres from the southern edge, from where a private arrangement or taxi is needed. Multiple loop routes of 10 to 15 kilometres cross the plateau's forest and meadow interior. The terrain gains only 275 metres of elevation overall, remaining predominantly flat across the karst surface with gradual rolling gradients through beech and oak stands. The surface alternates between compacted forest tracks, grassy paths, and occasional rocky limestone exposures. The plateau receives high rainfall by Navarrese standards and stays notably green and cool throughout warmer months. The Urbasa plateau is particularly notable for its spring and early summer wildflower displays — purple orchids and foxgloves bloom across forest clearings from late April through June. The beech woods thin toward the plateau rim, giving way to panoramic views north toward the Pyrenees and south across the Estella basin. Several natural springs (fuentes) marked on walking maps are scattered across the plateau, providing reliable water on most routes. Key landmarks include the Nacedero del Urederra at the plateau's southern edge, the spectacular source of the Urederra River reached by a separately marked path descending through limestone karst to turquoise pools. This extension adds 6–8 kilometres and roughly 300 metres of descent. The plateau also contains megalithic dolmen sites from Bronze Age settlement scattered across the meadow zones. The Área Recreativa provides picnic facilities, basic toilets, and route maps from information boards. Afternoon thunderstorms build rapidly over the plateau in summer; early starts are advisable.
