La Venencia

La Venencia is one of the most extraordinary bars in Madrid and one of the most authentic sherry bars in the world. Located on Calle Echegaray in the Huertas neighbourhood, the bar has operated continuously since 1929 and has changed almost nothing in that time. The walls are covered in faded postcards, old photographs, and Civil War-era memorabilia that the owner refuses to explain or discuss — visitors are expected to observe the same silence. The bar itself is fronted by large wooden barrels of fino and manzanilla sherry, and orders are written in chalk directly on the wooden bar top, erased when paid. The lighting is dim, the furniture is worn, and the atmosphere is entirely unique.

The drinks menu at La Venencia is almost comically simple. Fino and manzanilla sherry are poured directly from the barrels into straight, narrow glasses. A small selection of other sherries — amontillado, palo cortado — is available, as is a limited range of traditional snacks including olives, anchovies, and small portions of jamón. There is no cocktail programme, no draught beer, and no spirits bar. This deliberate narrowness is part of the point: La Venencia is about sherry, conversation, and continuity. Prices are modest — glasses of sherry start at around €2–€3 — and the bar has shown no inclination to raise them to match the increasingly fashionable neighbourhood around it.

Cameras are emphatically not welcome. The bar has been photographed extensively without permission and the current owner has made clear that photography, particularly flash photography, is considered disrespectful. Visitors who stand at the bar, drink a cold glass of fino, and absorb one of the most specific and unrepeatable atmospheres in Spain will find La Venencia unforgettable. The bar opens in the early evening and closes around 1 am. It is busiest between 8 pm and 11 pm, when the combination of locals and well-informed tourists gives the small space a gentle but genuine buzz. No reservations are accepted or required.
