Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace) in Retiro

The Palacio de Cristal is a magnificent Victorian iron-and-glass greenhouse pavilion built in 1887 in the heart of Retiro Park, designed by the architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco for the Exposición de Filipinas — an exhibition showcasing the flora and fauna of Spain's Pacific colony. Inspired by London's Crystal Palace of 1851 but on a more intimate and elegant scale, the structure combines a central iron-ribbed dome with arched glass facades that flood the interior with natural light. It stands on a small ornamental lake in the southern section of Retiro Park and has been classified as a national heritage monument.

Since 1986, the Palacio de Cristal has been used by the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía as a venue for large-scale, site-specific contemporary art installations by major international artists. The empty white interior becomes a blank canvas for interventions responding to the extraordinary qualities of the space — its scale, its natural light, and the transparency of the glass walls that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. Past exhibiting artists have included Cristina Iglesias, Olafur Eliasson, and Francis Alÿs. All exhibitions are free of charge. Exhibitions change roughly every six months.

Outside, the small lake that mirrors the palace's glass facade is a focal point for visitors throughout Retiro Park. Ceramic tiles by Daniel Zuloaga cover the external base and rusticated plinth. The neighbouring Palacio de Velázquez — a brick exhibition hall from the same 1887 exposition — stands 200 metres north and hosts additional Reina Sofía exhibitions, also free. Visiting both buildings in sequence adds perhaps 30 minutes to a Crystal Palace visit and rounds out the Retiro art experience effectively.
