A spectacular 33-km urban park built along the Manzanares River after the M-30 motorway was buried underground, featuring cycle paths, playgrounds, outdoor gyms, paddle tennis courts, beaches, and eight bridges. One of Europe's most ambitious urban park projects.
Madrid Río is a 33-kilometre urban park built along both banks of the Manzanares River following the burial of the M-30 urban motorway in a 6-kilometre underground tunnel between 2004 and 2011. The project, one of the most ambitious urban regeneration schemes in European history, transformed a noisy industrial corridor into a continuous green band connecting the historic city centre to the southern residential districts. The park was designed by a team including landscape architects Burgos & Garrido and West 8, winning major international design awards after completion.
The park encompasses an extraordinary variety of amenities along its length. At the northern end near the Puente de la Princesa, a summer beach facility opens with artificial sand, water play areas, and paddle tennis courts. The central section, from the Puente de Segovia to the Puente de Toledo, contains the densest concentration of facilities: outdoor gyms, children's play parks of various age groups, picnic meadows, a dedicated dog park, and the Matadero Madrid arts centre integrated into the park's southern boundary. The Puente del Rey — a new pedestrian bridge at the northern entry — offers a framed view of the Royal Palace above the park's tree canopy.
Eight bridges cross the Manzanares along the park's length, including the historic 16th-century Puente de Segovia designed by Juan de Herrera (architect of El Escorial) and the 18th-century Puente de Toledo, both integrated as heritage landmarks. Cycling is a primary activity: a dedicated cycle path runs the full 33 km and connects to BiciMAD public bike hire stations throughout. Running, walking, and family picnicking are all extremely popular. The park's proximity to Casa de Campo at the western end makes combination visits natural.

When to visit
Weekday mornings are the quietest for walking or cycling. The summer beach facility is most crowded on weekend afternoons. Spring visits in April and May offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures, fresh greenery, and accessible facilities.
Accessibility
The main cycle and walking paths through Madrid Río are paved, flat, and fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The bridges connecting both banks have ramped access. Some riverside nature paths are on unpaved surfaces that may be uneven in wet conditions.
