Casa Grande de Trives

Casa Grande de Trives is a restored 19th-century Galician manor house in the mountain town of Pobra de Trives, in the Ourense highlands approximately 100 km southeast of Ourense city. The property sits at roughly 700 metres elevation in the foothills of the Trevinca range, placing it at the gateway to the Ribeira Sacra wine country to the northwest — a landscape of steep river gorges, Romanesque churches, and terraced vineyards producing Mencía red wines. The surrounding rural comarca is well-suited to exploration by car, with hiking trails through chestnut forests and access to the Sil canyon viewpoints within an hour's drive.

The three-storey granite manor retains the proportions and character of a 19th-century pazo: a formal garden at the entrance, coffered timber ceilings, a wide wooden staircase, and period furniture distributed through common rooms and bedrooms. The conversion to hotel use has preserved original architectural details throughout rather than modernising the interiors into generic comfort.

Accommodation consists of classic double rooms and junior suites. Suites include separate sitting areas overlooking either the garden or the surrounding countryside. All rooms have free WiFi. The in-house restaurant serves traditional Ourense mountain cuisine built around seasonal local produce and kitchen-garden herbs: caldo gallego, lacón con grelos, freshwater trout, and slow-braised local pork. A private wine cellar beneath the house stocks Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras, and broader Spanish labels; guided wine tastings can be arranged on request for individuals and small groups.

There is no spa or fitness centre. The property is managed on a small-scale, personally attentive basis — front-desk staff provide detailed advice on rural walking routes, local wine producers open to visits, and the Roman gold-mining terraces at Las Médulas (a UNESCO World Heritage Site approximately 85 km by road). The hotel suits independent travellers who want a characterful rural base in Galicia's inland wine country rather than a coastal resort.
