Playa del Tarajal

Playa del Tarajal is a distinctive beach at the southwestern extremity of Ceuta, situated approximately 3.5 kilometres from the city centre close to the Tarajal border crossing — the main land frontier between the Spanish autonomous city and Morocco. The beach is a mix of sand and shingle roughly 200 metres in length, with a slightly darker colouring due to the basalt and sedimentary character of this end of the Strait of Gibraltar coastline. The water here is the Strait itself rather than the calmer open Mediterranean, and currents can be noticeable in this zone as Atlantic and Mediterranean water exchange through the channel, producing a more dynamic sea state than at Ceuta's sheltered coves. Wave action is moderate on calm days but can become brisk when the levante easterly wind channels through the Strait, making conditions at Tarajal less predictable than at beaches such as Calamocarro or Benítez. What makes Playa del Tarajal genuinely unique is its geopolitical context: the beach sits directly adjacent to the border fence and crossing infrastructure, and the panoramic views from the shoreline take in the Moroccan coast, the shipping lanes of the Strait, and the visual reality of the frontier in a way found at no other beach in Spain. No permanent commercial facilities operate at the beach, though public toilets are available near the Calle Tarajal approach road. The beach is walkable from Playa del Chorrillo in approximately 20 minutes along the coastal road, or reachable by taxi from the centre for around €7–10. Birdwatchers note that the Tarajal area lies on a well-documented migratory corridor used by raptors and passerines crossing the Strait each spring and autumn, with dawn visits during migration season offering a rewarding complement to the beach experience. The raw, unpretentious character of the beach and its singular location attract visitors drawn by geography and curiosity as much as by typical beach amenities.
