Kayaking Around the Ceuta Peninsula

Sea kayaking around the Ceuta peninsula offers one of the most complete perspectives of this compact Spanish enclave positioned on the North African coast. Paddlers depart from Puerto Deportivo de Ceuta and can choose between short loops hugging the sheltered western seaboard, or longer circuits rounding Monte Hacho to explore the dramatic eastern cliffs facing Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. The western route, approximately 5 km, passes beneath the city's historic Moorish walls and offers views of the Murallas Reales (Royal Walls) from the waterline — a perspective unavailable from land. The full peninsula circuit of 18 km suits intermediate paddlers with at least four hours of available time and comfortable open-water experience. Club Náutico de Ceuta offers guided tours with bilingual Spanish–English guides who identify coastal fortifications, seabird nesting sites and, in summer, occasional jellyfish nurseries visible just below the surface. Equipment provided includes sit-on-top or touring kayaks, paddles, buoyancy aids and a waterproof bag. No prior kayaking experience is necessary for guided tours on the sheltered western coast. Conditions on the eastern Mediterranean-facing side can become choppy when levante winds exceed 20 knots, and guided groups adjust routes accordingly. Water temperature ranges from 16°C in January to 26°C in August. Outside June–September a 3 mm wetsuit is recommended for session durations beyond 90 minutes. Ceuta's status as a Spanish autonomous city ensures excellent coastguard coverage and well-maintained harbour infrastructure throughout the season. The coastal scenery combines layers of history — Byzantine and Portuguese fortification remnants are visible from the water — with encounters with seabirds including yellow-legged gulls, shags and the occasional peregrine falcon that nests on Monte Hacho's eastern cliffs.
