El Xampanyet is a Barcelona institution — a traditional cava bar on Carrer de Montcada in El Born that has been pouring its house sparkling wine from barrel since 1929. The bar takes its name from 'xampanyet', a Catalan style of light, slightly sweet sparkling wine that predates the codification of cava as a denomination.

Barcelona institution since 1929, famous for its house cava (sparkling wine) and simple Catalan tapas on beautiful Carrer de Montcada. Colorful azulejo tiles, barrels of cava, and an authentic atmosphere. Essential El Born stop.

The house xampanyet here is served very cold, poured at the bar into small glasses, and accompanied by a selection of simple tapas that form the pillars of traditional Catalan bar food: canned anchovies in oil, pa amb tomàquet, and a small plate of olives. The interior is one of the most beautiful in El Born — hand-painted azulejo tiles in blue and white, barrels stacked behind the bar, photographs and old ephemera covering every surface — and has been maintained in its original condition with commendable faithfulness. Carrer de Montcada is one of the most atmospheric medieval streets in Barcelona, lined with palaces now converted into museums, and El Xampanyet has stood at number 22 through all of that history. The bar opens at midday for lunch service and again in the evening, and closes on Mondays. No reservations are taken. Arriving at opening time gives the best chance of a comfortable spot at the bar or one of the few small tables.

Frequently asked questions

What is xampanyet and how does it differ from cava?

Xampanyet is a light, slightly sweet Catalan sparkling wine made in a traditional style predating the formal cava denomination. It is less dry and more approachable than most modern cavas, served very cold and best enjoyed in small glasses with simple tapas.

What are El Xampanyet's opening hours?

El Xampanyet opens Tuesday through Saturday for lunch (12pm–3:30pm) and dinner (7pm–11:30pm), and Sunday for lunch (12pm–4pm) only. It is closed on Mondays.

Is El Xampanyet only a drinks bar or does it serve food?

The bar serves a concise menu of traditional Catalan tapas alongside the cava — canned anchovies, pa amb tomàquet, olives, and a few other simple items. It is a tapas bar rather than a restaurant but the food is considered an essential part of the experience.

Is El Xampanyet tourist-facing or locally used?

El Xampanyet is visited by both tourists and locals. Its position on Carrer de Montcada brings tourist traffic, but its quality and authenticity have ensured it retains a loyal local following. The combination is what makes the atmosphere so enjoyable.
