Bar Marsella

Bar Marsella is the oldest bar in Barcelona, operating continuously since 1820 on Carrer dels Escudellers in the El Raval neighbourhood. The interior has been preserved with almost supernatural neglect — dusty bottles of absinthe and liqueurs crowd the shelves, cobwebs hang from the ceiling, old mirrors fog with age, and the original wooden bar is worn smooth by nearly two centuries of elbows. It is a place that has become its own atmosphere, a living archaeological stratum of Barcelona's tavern culture. Hemingway and Picasso are among those said to have drunk here, though the bar's appeal requires no famous endorsement beyond the experience of standing inside it. The speciality is absinthe, served in the traditional manner — the bottle is placed on the table, a sugar cube balanced on a slotted spoon over the glass, and water dripped slowly through. House vermouth is also excellent. There is no cocktail list, no food, and no aspirations beyond being exactly what it has always been. Bar Marsella opens in the late evening only — typically from around 10pm — and serves until the early hours. It is not a place for those seeking comfort or efficiency, but for those who want to sit inside a piece of Barcelona's history and feel the city's deep past pressing in from every dusty corner.
