The Casas del Onyar are a row of multi-storey houses in different shades — ochre yellow, burnt orange, powder pink, terracotta red, and cream — that lean directly over the Onyar River in Girona, Catalonia. They form one of the most recognisable river-town scenes in Spain, their coloured facades stacked against each other and reflected in the water below when the river is still. The scene has been compared repeatedly to the painted canal houses of Venice in miniature.
The most photographed viewpoint is from the pedestrian bridges that cross the Onyar in the old town, particularly the Pont de les Peixateries Velles — the iron bridge originally built by Gustave Eiffel's company in the 1870s. From this bridge, the row of houses unfolds symmetrically to left and right, with their reflections completing the composition in the water below on calm mornings. A second useful position is from the opposite bank, where a telephoto lens can compress the coloured facades into a flat, graphic image.
Reflection quality depends entirely on water movement. In the early morning — before dawn on windless days — the river surface is at its calmest and reflections are mirror-like. Any breeze that develops through the day creates rippling that breaks up the reflection, though it can also produce artistic painterly effects. Morning light from the east hits the facades from around 7 AM in summer (later in winter), and the warm golden-hour colour complements the orange and yellow tones of the buildings. Blue hour after sunset provides cooler, more uniform light that reduces the contrast between the sky and the coloured facades.
Girona is approximately 100 kilometres north-east of Barcelona and is accessible by high-speed AVE train in around 40 minutes. The bridge viewpoints are on public pedestrianised infrastructure and no access fee applies. Tripods can be used on the bridges but space is limited and pedestrian traffic can be constant during tourist season. The riverbank path allows lateral movement to adjust composition.
