Aigüestortes National Park — Estany de Sant Maurici

Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is Catalonia's only national park, located in the high Pyrenees of the Pallars Sobirà comarca in Lleida province, with peaks rising above 3,000 metres. The park's eastern gateway is the Estany de Sant Maurici — a glacial lake at 1,882 metres elevation — which offers one of the most celebrated landscape photographs in Spain: the twin spires of the Encantats massif (2,747 m) perfectly reflected in the still lake surface during the hour after dawn.

The lake is accessed from the village of Espot on the eastern flank of the park, a short drive from the Sort–Esterri d'Àneu valley road. Private vehicles are not permitted beyond the Espot parking area during the main season (June–September); access to the lake requires a park taxi or a 7-kilometre walk on the official path. Park taxis begin operating from approximately 7 AM. Photographers targeting the pre-dawn blue hour and sunrise reflections should either stay overnight at the Ernest Mallafré refuge (500 metres from the lake) or accept arriving after true dawn by taking the first park taxi.

Reflection conditions at Sant Maurici are most reliable between late June and early October. In the hour before and after sunrise on calm mornings, the lake surface becomes a mirror for the Encantats peaks. Wind is the primary threat to reflection quality; the lake's orientation means that drainage winds from the high cirques can disturb the surface by mid-morning. Arrival at the lake at first light, before thermal air movement develops, is the primary strategy.

Autumn — from mid-September to mid-October — transforms the lakeside with golden larches and birches that frame the Encantats peaks in warm colour. This is considered the single best period for the location, combining reflection potential with autumn colour. Snow on the Encantats from October onward adds a further visual dimension. Drone flights are prohibited throughout the national park without special scientific authorisation.
