Montserrat

Montserrat, the jagged mountain massif 50km northwest of Barcelona in Catalonia, is reached in about 1 hour 15 minutes via the FGC R5 line from Plaça d'Espanya, connecting to the rack railway (cremallera) or the Aeri cable car for the final ascent. The Benedictine Monestir de Montserrat sits partway up the mountain, home to the basilica housing La Moreneta, the revered Black Madonna statue, and the Escolania, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, which sings daily around 1pm and again at 6:45pm (with exceptions in July and some Saturdays). The Museu de Montserrat holds works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso, and Dalí alongside archaeological and liturgical pieces. Beyond the monastery buildings, funiculars climb further to Sant Joan and Santa Cova, from where marked trails lead across the massif's distinctive rounded rock formations, including the strenuous but rewarding hike to Sant Jeroni, Montserrat's highest peak, with panoramic views over Catalonia on clear days. A typical day begins with an early train to beat the tour-bus crowds, arriving in time to visit the basilica and hear the Escolania before midday. The afternoon suits either the museum for those preferring a lower-effort visit, or the Sant Jeroni trail via funicular and foot for more active travelers, followed by a return descent by rack railway or cable car. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) bring the most comfortable hiking temperatures and clearer mountain air than the hazier summer months, and arriving before mid-morning avoids both crowds and the midday heat on exposed trail sections. Food options at the complex include a self-service restaurant and bar near the monastery plaza, along with picnic spots near the funicular stations and along the trails, useful for travelers spending the full day on the mountain. The combined 'Tot Montserrat' ticket sold at FGC machines in Plaça d'Espanya bundles train, rack railway, and funicular access, simplifying logistics for a single round trip.
