Penedès Wine Region

The Penedès wine denomination occupies a broad plateau and coastal plain between the Garraf massif and the Anoia River in Barcelona province, Catalonia, centered on the towns of Vilafranca del Penedès and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The region is Catalonia's largest wine appellation and the world's most productive zone for Cava — the Spanish method-traditional sparkling wine. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, self-styled Capital del Cava, hosts over 80 Cava producers including the two giants of Spanish sparkling wine production: Codorníu, founded 1551 (making it one of Spain's oldest wineries) and occupying a spectacular Modernista complex designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch (listed as a national monument); and Freixenet, whose winery offers affordable cellar tours through 30km of underground tunnels. Both offer tasting-room experiences and guided visits. Codorníu's tour explores the Puig i Cadafalch buildings, the underground cellars carved into the rock, and a contemporary wine experience. Beyond Cava, the appellation is increasingly recognized for still wines: Torres, based at Vilafranca del Penedès, is one of Spain's most internationally successful producers and offers a comprehensive wine tourism experience including a wine theme park (Familia Torres). The three core Cava grape varieties — Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada — are all white; increasingly, indigenous red varieties such as Garnatxa and Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) are vinified as still wines. The grape harvest in September transforms Sant Sadurní into a celebration of the vintage with street events and the grape-stomping festival.
