Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, established in 1955 and expanded over subsequent decades to 40,852 hectares, is Catalonia's only national park and the only national park in Spain's Mediterranean region. It straddles the central Pyrenees across the provinces of Lleida, in the comarca of Alta Ribagorça to the west and Pallars Sobirà to the east. The park's name captures its two defining landscapes: Aigüestortes — meaning twisted waters in Catalan — describes the braided, meandering streams of glacial meltwater in the western sector around Boí; Estany de Sant Maurici is the iconic eastern glacier lake, a deep blue mirror backed by the twin quartzite needles of Els Encantats (2,747m), one of the most photographed mountain scenes in the Pyrenees. The park contains over 200 permanent glacial lakes at altitudes between 1,600m and 2,500m, connected by waterfalls and streams. Peaks include Comaloforno at 3,033m. Wildlife includes Pyrenean chamois (found throughout the park), roe deer, marmots, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures, and bearded vultures (gypaets), reintroduced in the 1990s and now successfully breeding. Brown bears are occasionally sighted in the most remote western areas. Private vehicles are prohibited inside the park; access is exclusively via authorized park jeep-taxis from the gateway villages of Boí (western entrance) and Espot (eastern entrance). The GR11 Trans-Pyrenean long-distance path traverses the park. Multi-day trekking is served by several mountain refuges (refugis) run by the Catalan Mountaineering Federation.

When to visit

July to mid-September is the main hiking season with all trails accessible and mountain refuges open. Late September and early October bring spectacular autumn color in the beech and birch forests at lower elevations, and the park is noticeably quieter than the August peak.

Accessibility

The park's terrain is high-mountain and largely inaccessible for wheelchair users. The jeep-taxi system can transport visitors with limited mobility to lakeside areas near Boí and Espot. The visitor centers in Boí (Boí village) and Espot are fully accessible. The main tracks near the lake shores are gravel and relatively level.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get into the park if private vehicles are prohibited?

Authorized park jeep-taxis (4WD vehicles) depart from the villages of Boí and Espot and are the only motor access inside the park. They run regularly in summer. From the drop-off points, visitors continue on foot. Boí and Espot are reached by car from the N-260 highway or by bus from Lleida.

When is the park accessible for hiking?

July to mid-September is the primary hiking season when all trails are clear of snow and mountain refuges are staffed. Late June and early October are possible but some high routes may have snow. Winter access is restricted and requires snowshoes or ski touring equipment.

Is the park suitable for families with young children?

Yes, with appropriate planning. The jeep-taxis drop visitors close to the main lakes, so even young children can reach the most spectacular scenery. The lakeside areas are relatively flat. Higher trails and refugi routes require good fitness and experience.
