Parador Hostal San Marcos, León

Parador Hostal San Marcos stands on the south bank of the Bernesga River in central León and is among the most historically significant hotels in Spain. The building began as a pilgrim hospital and monastery in the 12th century, serving travelers on the Camino de Santiago; it was expanded and embellished through the 16th century into its current Plateresque form — the ornate Renaissance facade stretches over 100 metres along Plaza de San Marcos and is considered one of the finest examples of Plateresque architecture in Iberia. The property became a Parador in 1965 and has been upgraded several times since; the original cloisters, chapter house, and sacristy are preserved and accessible to hotel guests as part of the daily experience. The Camino Francés passes directly in front of the building.

Rooms range from standard doubles in the modern wing to superior doubles and cloisters suites in the historic monastery section. Rooms in the original building feature stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and direct views of the cloister garden — the most atmospheric accommodation available in León.
