Parador de Zamora

The Parador de Zamora occupies a 15th-century Renaissance palace on the Plaza de Viriato, the main civic square of Zamora, a historic city of around 60,000 inhabitants on the southern bank of the Duero River. The palace dates from approximately 1459 and was originally commissioned by the Count of Alba de Aliste; it remained a noble residence before being incorporated into the Spanish Paradores heritage hotel network. Zamora's Romanesque cathedral — one of the finest examples of the style in Spain — is a five-minute walk uphill, and the city's medieval fortified walls are directly adjacent to the hotel garden.

The exterior presents classic late-Gothic and Renaissance stonework: a heraldic portal, corner towers, and an inner courtyard with arched galleries on two levels. Interior spaces preserve original carved wooden ceilings, large-format tapestries depicting hunting scenes, and period furniture alongside discreetly integrated modern services. The 52 rooms divide into standard doubles, superior doubles, and suites. All carry Parador-standard beds and linens, climate control, flat-screen televisions, and marble-fitted bathrooms; superior rooms facing the courtyard benefit from quieter and more atmospheric surrounds.

The hotel restaurant showcases Zamoran culinary tradition: slow-roasted lamb (lechazo), bacalao (salt cod) preparations, and chickpea stews figure prominently, paired with wines from the Toro Denominación de Origen produced roughly 30 kilometres west — a powerful Tempranillo appellation with a growing international reputation.

A seasonal outdoor pool, set within the Renaissance courtyard garden, is one of the property's most popular features in summer. Fitness facilities are available but modest. Service reflects the Paradores chain's ethos of cultural immersion paired with professional hospitality; staff can arrange guided tours of Zamora's exceptional cluster of Romanesque churches, which number among the highest concentrations in any single city in the world.
