Posada de Liébana

The Posada de Liébana is a rural inn in the village of Tama in the Liébana valley, approximately 100 km south of Santander. The village sits in the middle section of the valley, positioned between the market town of Potes (8 km east) and the Fuente Dé cable car terminus (24 km west). The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana — one of the four Holy Places of Christianity and a pilgrimage destination on the Camino Lebaniense — is 4 km from the inn. The valley is enclosed by the Picos de Europa peaks to the north and the ridges of the Cordillera Cantábrica to the south, giving the surrounding landscape a distinct Alpine quality at low elevation.

The building is a restored traditional stone farmhouse with thick rubble walls, low-beamed ceilings and locally sourced furnishings. Standard rooms and Family rooms are available, both simply and comfortably fitted with good-quality beds, en-suite bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. There is no spa or pool; the garden and terrace with valley ridgeline views serve as the social outdoor space. The inn's scale is small, with most bookings handled directly by the owners.

The restaurant is central to the experience: traditional Cantabrian dishes built on local valley produce, including cocido montañés (bean and collard stew), Liébana cured pork charcuterie and the valley's renowned Queso Picón Bejes-Tresviso — a protected-designation blue cheese produced in the hamlets above. Breakfast uses local honey, homemade preserves and fresh bread. The owners speak Spanish and workable English and are well-placed to advise on valley hiking routes, trout fishing permits for the Deva river and cable-car timing at Fuente Dé. The property is most suited to active travellers, hikers and pilgrims rather than guests seeking spa or city amenities.
